Things You Might Want for Distance Learning

Every person learns differently so what you need will differ from child to child. Not everything on this list will apply, so take some time to really think about your child’s habits and their approach to learning and what would best suit them!

 A Designated Learning Spot
It is important to set up a space for your child to learn as it minimizes distractions and allows them to become more immersed in the class. It does not have to be a full, fancy desk set up, but just a place where they can be knowing it is time for school. It can be a couch with a lap desk or a corner of the house where they can change sitting positions (sitting on the floor, a chair, or even standing up) to help them stay engaged.

 Timer
Setting a timer can help your child stay on task and can discourage procrastination by keeping them focused on the task at hand. Sometimes just looking at the timer and seeing you only have a few minutes left is enough to give you a last spurt of motivation to finish the task. It can be a simple kitchen timer or one on your phone. You can even use an Alexa or Google Home to set alarms for different classes for older students!

 Ball balance chair/Exercise ball
If you have a particularly rambunctious child, this one might be for you. This chair is helpful for children who have a hard time staying still in their seat. Some kids want to stand up and move around or they have a hard time focusing. This allows them to have constructed restlessness and will discourage them from standing up and walking away from their lecture.

White board
They might be required to have a white board by their teachers. You can find a small one at stores such as Dollar Tree! Another alternative would be to use those plastic paper sleeves, place a white sheet of paper in it, and it can be used as a makeshift whiteboard! Even if not required, some students might prefer the novelty of working on a whiteboard! There is also a white board contact paper that you can put on a wall for relatively cheap and it peels right off without damaging your walls.

Patience
It’s hard having children at home all the time now, especially when you have to do work! A little bit of patience can go a long way, they were picked up from school one day in March and have not seen their friends since; I would be grumpy too if I didn’t understand what was going on. Just have some patience and everything is going to be alright!
